Are you one of the
laughlorn? Do you know people who are smile challenged, dead serious
or weaned on a pickle, you might want to share these ideas from the
handy guidebook, 55 Ways To Improve your Laugh Life.
If you haven't smiled or laughed much since 9/11/01, you're missing
out on many health benefits. The latest medical research supports what
we've known all along. Humor and laughter are good for you. A room rattling
belly laugh can lower your blood pressure, reduce pain, increase brain
power, cut the risk of repeat heart attacks and more.
Laughter is a career builder. It boosts creativity, reduces tension
and conflict and makes you more promotable. It's time to lighten up.
Karen Susman, national speaker on humor, life balance and networking
skills uses humor as her main survival skill. When struck with Guillain-Barre
Syndrome, Karen used humor to reduce pain, stay sane and recover from
paralysis. She even managed to amuse herself by flirting with the men
in those nifty hospital gowns passing by her hospital room. That they
were hanging on to their catheter bag carriers didn't dampen Karen's
wit.
A few ideas for maximizing your mirth are:
- Distribute cartoons
with the captions removed. Ask employees to make up their own captions.
Display.
- Have a contest
for creative ways to use duck tape (or is that duct tape?)
- Use a baby picture
to announce the employee of the month. Let everyone guess who the
honoree is.
- Blow $10 at
a toy store.
- Wear a clown
nose to a meeting.
- Fly a kite during
lunch break.
- Jot down things,
people or events that make you smile. Keep the list handy for those
down times.
- Search for mirth.
Look for it everywhere.
- Pick someone
to lift with laughter.
- Come up with
your own ways to improve your laugh life. Hint: Funny videos,
books, cassettes or CDs are abundant.
